I was just discussing with a friend of mine, and fellow photographer, Deana, the downfalls of being cheap and having a crop sensor camera.  Guilty, guilty, and guilty again.

The whole concept of crop sensor cameras is that they are significantly cheaper than full frame cameras.  For example, the 5D Mark II is a full frame camera that came out in 2008, retailing for around $2,175.  One step down, with a crop sensor, is the EOS 7D, which came out in 2009, retailing for around $1,350.

The major downfall of having a cropped sensor is that a lot less light is hitting the sensor, and you're trying to get the same amount of detail, color, and light on about 30% less sensor real estate.  With modern technologies, the sensors have been getting more and more sophisticated, and better at getting the data that it needs on a smaller sensor.  This major difference is also shown in the sensor size of point and shoot cameras.  Those are even smaller than the cropped sensor SLRs, and it becomes obvious when trying to take darker pictures.



One of the results of cropped sensors is magnification.  The same lens on a cropped frame sensor is much further zoomed in than on a full frame sensor.  So that nice cheap 50mm f/1.x prime portrait lens that everyone raves about is rather useless on a cropped frame sensor, and one needs instead to opt for a slightly more expensive 35mm lens to get the same effect and zoom on the cropped frame sensor SLR as the full frame sensor does with the 50mm.
